We love it when we see innovative signage designed, produced and installed perfectly and it seems like high street bakers Greggs have hit the proverbial nail on the head with their latest marketing campaign in Newcastle.
At the start of November this year shoppers noticed that their shop signage on Northumberland Street in Newcastle had been replaced with a sign produced in reverse – strange?
As it happens this particular Greggs outlet is directly opposite Fenwicks department store which is famed for its extravagant christmas window displays that always attract a great deal of public attention. In what we consider an inspired marketing move, the reflection of the replacement signage on the front of the Greggs shop is now seen perfectly to anyone looking at the Fenwicks christmas display!
Some might see this as being a bit cheeky, using another business for free promotion, but we think it’s a stroke of genius. A shopper who took a video of the sign in reflection posted it on twitter and to date has had over 1.4 million views and over 100,000 likes and re-tweets!
It just goes to show how, with a clever use of brand marketing techniques, something like a bakery shop sign that would normally be considered to be somewhat ‘off-line’ has produced a marketing campaign that went viral.
Greggs, we take our hats off to you!
